In the 1950s, black came to become a symbol of individuality and intellectual and social rebellion, the color of people who did not take proven norms and values. In Paris, it had been worn by Still left-Bank intellectuals and performers including Juliette Gréco, and by some associates on the Defeat Movement in The big apple and San Francisco.[39]
